The Challenge

VollyMe wanted a social platform that felt different from the feed-driven networks dominating the market: real-time conversations and short-video sharing organized around interest-based communities called Vollys, where discovery comes from what users actually follow rather than an engagement-optimizing algorithm deciding what they see. That meant fast, real-time messaging and video sharing at global scale, on web and mobile from day one, without building a complex real-time backend from scratch.

The Engineering Strategy

HashOne Global built the platform on Next.js and Tailwind CSS, deployed globally through Vercel's edge network for fast load times regardless of where a user connects. Real-time messaging and authentication run on Supabase, giving VollyMe an instant, Slack-like chat experience without a custom real-time backend and connection layer built from the ground up.

AWS S3 handles media storage for the platform's short-video and photo sharing, and Google Analytics 4 tracks engagement across the Vollys communities. Building on Supabase's real-time layer rather than a custom WebSocket implementation was a deliberate trade-off: faster to ship, and it scales with Supabase's infrastructure rather than requiring re-architecture as usage grows.

The Result

  • iOS and Android live on both the App Store and Google Play, actively maintained
  • 3.8 / 5 Google Play rating across early reviews, with 5.0 / 5 on the App Store
  • Version 4.0 the latest release, shipping continued bug fixes and features into 2026

The web app shipped with the original 2022 to 2023 build; VollyMe's living product today is its iOS and Android apps, both still receiving updates years after launch.

Building real-time chat or social features without reinventing the backend?

Real-time messaging, presence and media sharing all have off-the-shelf building blocks now, so the engineering is choosing the right ones and not over-building. Tell us what you are building and we will come back with an architecture proposal and a timeline within one business day.
